Unlocking Salford Quays

The Lowry is at the heart of Salford Quays, and it is fitting that the centrepiece Community Engagement project for our 10th anniversary year explores and celebrates the history, heritage and legacy of this remarkable and influential area.

Funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Unlocking Salford Quays brings together local communities with artists, performers, writers and historians to create and animate a permanent new public sculpture trail around the Quays.  The area’s rich industrial and social history, which has been largely hidden from the thousands of people who live, work or visit around the Quays every day, will now be celebrated and brought to life.

Unprecedented change has seen the Quays reinvent itself – from thriving Manchester Docks to one of the country’s best waterside destinations.  As The Lowry celebrates its 10th birthday, and MediaCityUK approaches completion, now is the perfect time for local people to see their own ideas, memories, experiences and stories drive forward this unprecedented project.  Working closely with five leading artists, they will unlock the heritage of the Quays and provide a unique trail for future visitors that celebrates and anticipates the past, present and future of one of the region’s landmark centres.

Find out more about the project here or visit the Community section of our website under the Learn and Take Part menu at the top of this page.
