The Big Draw - Inside Outside
To celebrate The Big Draw 2007, artists Spacecadets worked with children and young people from Salford to explore original ways to make drawings and create fantastic inflatable pods and structures, resulting in an exhibition of work displayed at The Lowry.
Participants from Fiddlers Lane Primary School, St Luke’s with All Saints CE Primary School, Our Lady and the Lancashire Martyrs RC Primary School and a group of young people from all over the city took part in a series of creative workshops.
Using natural forms as inspiration, they explored unusual materials and processes to make artwork that investigated different ways of making drawings. ‘Inflatable drawings’ were then constructed which they experimented with by playing with light, shadow and projections.
The ‘Inside Outside’ launch event took place on Sat 13 October, where the exhibition of work created by the children and young people was open to the public. The participants were invited to The Lowry for the opening and a chance to show their artwork to their families and friends.
On the launch day we organised a free drop-in workshop led by Spacecadets, which was open to everybody who wanted to come along and draw. We transformed the Studio foyer with plants and natural materials from a nearby park, creating a new and magical environment for visitors to be inspired by.
Spacecadets pre-made enormous inflatable structures that were placed within the Studio, forming a landscape of paper pods as a canvas to create three-dimensional drawings. To add an element of play and discovery to the event, each structure was also designed with a doorway enabling participants to go in the inflatable and draw inside the paper pods.
Participants were encouraged to pick a selection of plants to form their own still life, and to study and draw the arrangement. They were then let loose on the inflatable pods, and using their previous drawings as inspiration they used brushes and ink to make marks on the structures. The large-scale pods reached over 8 feet high, allowing for families to each have a place to draw on the same inflatable depending on how tall they were!
