One Love: The Football Art Prize

UMBRO believe that what truly draws people to football isn’t fame or money; it is the emotion, the passion and the sheer joy of playing and watching the game. UMBRO shares that spirit, and One Love demonstrates this feeling for football.

In Spring 2006, The Lowry approached UMBRO to sponsor a major new art competition and exhibition which encapsulates the One Love ethos. The Lowry is challenging today’s most exciting, up-and-coming artists to capture the true spirit of football through painting, drawing, photography or film and UMBRO immediately recognised the suitability and potential of the project.

Taking place in world cup year One Love: The Football Art Prize replicates a similar competition held in 1953, which LS Lowry won with his classic football painting “Going to the Match”.



The competition itself is has a prestigious judging panel including art critic Sacha Craddock, artist Mark Wallinger, business-man/football fan, Greg Dyke and footballer and artist David James, seen above. A high profile awards ceremony with representatives from football and the arts, will take place on Tue 28 November and the work of 100 lucky finalists will be exhibited in The Lowry Galleries from Sun 2 December 2006 – 25 March 2007.
