Transformations Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Transformations is a series of commissions for artists to respond to the unique architecture of our Promenade Gallery. Submission is open to artists living or working in the UK who are keen to explore new approaches to their practice. The selection panel for the second commission includes artists Jane and Louise Wilson and Stephen Snoddy (Director - The New Art Gallery, Walsall). Please note that the deadline for submissions for Transformations 2 has now closed.
Transformations 2 Winning artist - Sarah Staton The Transformations 2 commission, opening in Spring 2009, has been awarded to Sarah Staton, a Sheffield based artist who studied at St Martin’s School of Art in London. For the commission, the artist proposes to install large-scale works on plinths 3-4 metres in height and will take advantage of the playfulness of hidden spaces within the gallery. Fascinated by construction processes, Staton’s work investigates form, function and feeling through a series of architectural and sculptural interventions using old and new commercial technology.
Since listening to The Fall in her twenties, Salford’s musical heritage has provided an audio inspiration to Staton’s work, and it will be exciting to see what impact this could have on the new commission at The Lowry.
