Salford Animation
Two Salford primary schools were invited to take part in the project, St Paul’s CE and The Friars. The pupils worked with animator Paul Pickford to create a short piece of film that explored methods of developing still images into movement.

In each school a handful of pupils form Years Three, Four, Five and Six were carefully selected by their teachers to create a working group of twenty. A total of seven afternoon sessions were run and these took place once a week. The project began with an introductory trip to The Lowry to see the You’ll Never Know: Drawing and Random Interference exhibition. (The exhibition explored the concept of drawing in its widest form, with work from a wide range of artists using media as diverse as film, photography, radio waves, dripping candle wax and food.) The abstract theme provided a wide scope for individual interpretation.
The pupils ran the project themselves with support from Paul and their teachers, each of them were given roles and were in charge of different areas including lighting, model making, directing and script writing. The results of all this hard work are two wonderful animations!
