Signatures 2008
A celebration of Greater Manchester’s young dancers , 7pm, Sun 19 October 2008
On Sun 19 October 2008, Dance Initiative Greater Manchester (DiGM) in partnership with The Lowry will present Signatures, featuring youth dance companies from across Greater Manchester performing dance works inspired by motifs created by professional dance company Hofesh Shechter, and spiced with a splash of their own choreographic interpretation and dance style. DiGM now welcomes applications from groups wishing to take part in Signatures.
Groups performing are selected from a host of applications and represent their district in this Greater Manchester wide showcase. Selected groups will be asked to send their choreographers/group leaders to a workshop with professional dance company Hofesh Schecter on Sat 7 June. At this workshop they will be taught a short dance phrase and then will be asked to take this away and reinterpret it into a new dance work, or incorporate into an existing work.
Hofesh Shechter is an Israeli, London-based Choreographer and Associate Artist at The Place. He was previously a dancer with the highly acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company and Jasmin Vardimon Company. Shechter’s elegant pieces are charged with engaging ideas and gripping atmosphere and he has also created work for the National Theatre, Channel 4’s Skins, The Royal Court Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and the Southbank Centre. In 2004 he won the Audience Choice award at The Place Prize finals.
Participating groups will also have an opportunity to see the professional performance work by Hofesh Shechter on Thu 9 and Fri 10 October at The Lowry.
We will present a maximum of 10 groups, ideally one group representing each district of Greater Manchester, these include (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan). We aim to present a range of dance styles and groups from different backgrounds and cultures. Both school-based and community groups are welcome to apply. This is not a showcase for professional groups. Selected groups are not paid to take part, but experience the thrill of performing on the stage at a prestigious theatre, The Lowry. There is no prize, as Signatures is not a competition and all groups are encouraged to support each other.
Groups applying are selected at the discretion of DiGM and The Lowry.
Look out for details of tickets prices and how to book coming soon.
