> Developed With The Lowry
We select four promising emerging companies a year to join our 'Developed With' programme and these companies benefit from a package of support to help them develop a brand new show.
Many of the Developed With shows go on to tour nationally and internationally and some even return to The Lowry to play in one of our bigger theatre spaces.
Meet our Developed With The Lowry family for 2016:
This Manchester-based physical theatre company comprises RADA MA Theatre Lab graduates Adam Davies (Tmesis Theatre) and Henry McGrath (Song Of The Goat). They founded Animikii Theatre in 2013 as a company that prides itself on the investigation and interrogation of the actor’s process.
Through Developed With The Lowry Animikii will create its first full-length production, Origins, a psychological study of Cain, the world’s first murderer. The show will premiere in The Studio in April 2016 before touring to rural venues in Cheshire and Lancashire and the Southbank Centre in London.
Salford-based Sophie Willan is an award-winning comedian, theatremaker and community artist originally from Bolton. Engagingly honest and darkly optimistic, Sophie takes inspiration from her unusual life experiences to create bold and exciting work that is accessible, thought-provoking and entertaining.
During 2015, Sophie was crowned winner of The Magners New Act and reached the finals of the Amused Moose Laugh Off, two prestigious national awards. She has provided tour support for comedian Luisa Omielan, headlined the BBC Presents Stage at the Edinburgh Festival 2015 and developed her own scripted project with BBC Comedy.
Through Developed With The Lowry, Sophie will create a dynamic project with two focused outcomes, that are both inspired by her experiences of growing up in the care system. Firstly, a raucous and anarchic solo show, that takes an inside-out look at herself through the eyes of social services, school reports, carers and even theatre critics! Premiering in The Studio in June 2016, the show will go on to run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Secondly, Sophie will work with a range of partners and organisations across Bolton and Trafford to support a group of young care-leavers to create a vibrant children's anthology of short stories based on their own experiences.
Art With Heart
Art with Heart are an award-winning company whose work has toured nationally and been featured on BBC Television and Radio. They create performance, participation and education projects with a focus on engaging women, young people and diverse communities in the arts. They make work with a social conscience, exploring themes such as identity, mental health, social justice and equality. Compelling, compassionate and candid, their work is created with humour, hope and a lot of heart.
Through Developed With The Lowry, Art with Heart will make a new production, Declaration, which asks how gaining a medical diagnosis changes the way we’re viewed by society and by ourselves. Using autobiographical material, comedy and warm hearted audience interaction, Declaration will be developed in consultation with medical professionals, ADHD and mental health support groups before premiering at The Studio in June 2016.
Colour the Clouds
This Greater Manchester -based company provide a unique theatrical experience for family audiences, combining accessible new writing with engaging, original music and vibrant physicality. Their supporting workshops and wrap-around activities means their audiences feel welcome, safe and involved as they are taken on a fantastic theatrical adventures.
Through Developed With The Lowry, Colour The Clouds will create Aleena's Garden, a new sensory production that will provide a very first theatre experience for ages 0-3 and their families, to premiere in The Studio in Autumn 2016.
> Associate Artists
Each year, we select one 'Developed With' company to become an Associate Artist, giving them full access to all the production and creative support The Lowry can offer, not just for one project, but for ever.
Our Associate Artists are:
"The Lowry took a chance on us when we were a young and unknown company and it has played a substantial role in our development ever since. This artistic, risk-taking and supportive approach is what makes The Lowry stand out from other venues as a fundamental development hub for young artists in the UK."
