A Midsummer Night's Dream
New production.

Out in the wood, Oberon, the fairy king and Tytania, his queen, are locked in a conflict that has turned nature upside down. In the city live two young women, one loved by two men, the other by none. When these four escape into the wood it’s their relationships that are turned upside down, so much so that they hardly know each other – or even themselves. By contrast, Bottom the weaver is always sure of himself, even when he’s been made an ass of…

Few composers have matched music to words to such potent effect as Britten does in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In Shakespeare’s comedy the composer found themes close to his heart: night, dreams and the supernatural and was inspired to write his most melodious opera, with a witty and utterly beguiling score. Conductor – Stuart Stratford Director – Martin Duncan Sung in English.
