When you’re newly carved from a piece of wood the last thing you want to do is sweep up and go to school. You want to have fun, like other boys. So begins the tale of the wooden boy who longs to be good but just can’t help tumbling nose first into trouble. In this new family opera, award-winning composer Jonathan Dove and playwright Alasdair Middleton turn Carlo Collodi’s classic into a fantastical musical story, which recaptures the weird and wonderful qualities of the 1880s original.
Conductor – David Parry
Director – Martin Duncan
Sung in English.

Opera Family Fun Day
Sat 16 February 2008
1pm – 4.30pm

To celebrate the arrival of Opera North’s new family opera The Adventures of Pinocchio on Fri 15 and Sat 16 February, Opera North and The Lowry are pleased to announce a day of free opera themed activities in The Lowry building on Sat 16 February from 1pm – 4.30pm.

Opera North hope that many people from the community and surrounding areas will come to The Lowry and try out the activities especially if they have never been to the theatre or opera before. From opera karaoke to unicycling, this is pre-show family fun that’s not to be missed.

Activities on the day include face painting, a story teller and opera karaoke from 1pm – 4pm. Anyone can join in these activities at any time throughout the day, and you don’t have to be able to sing to take part! There will be an opportunity to take a piece of the magic home with you in a Family friendly treasure hunt around The Lowry building. If you can solve the clues, you win a wooden Pinocchio toy, courtesy of Opera North. There’s also a circus skills workshop from 1.30pm – 4.30pm.

Come along to this fun session where you can try unicycling, juggling, diablo’s plate, plus many more fun activities. To get a taste of the performance before it starts, Opera North will be providing free tours of the set at 3.30pm and 4pm, with a touch tour at 4.45pm.

There is a maximum capacity of 20 people per tour. All activities are free and there’s no need to book beforehand, so arrive early to avoid disappointment!
