The M. R. James Trilogy

Discover the true meaning of Halloween with a selection of spine-chillers from the ‘Master of the English Ghost Story’.

Over a century after their first publication, M. R. James’ ghost stories still have the power to terrify and amuse; and these one-man shows, starring Robert Lloyd Parry, bring six of his eeriest and most entertaining tales back to life.

A Pleasing Terror (Sat 30 October 4pm)

In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-Book, a young antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees…

In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator…

A Warning to the Curious (Sat 30 October 8pm, Sun 31 October 4pm)

Lost Hearts introduces us to the predatory scholar Mr Abney, one of M.R. James most damnably memorable black magicians.

It is paired here with perhaps the author’s most   poignant work: A Warning to the Curious, in which an archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure.

Oh Whistle (Sun 31 October & Mon 1 November 8pm)

Oh Whistle, and I’ll Come to you, My Lad – a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is widely considered to be author’s masterpiece.

It is complemented by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft, vengeance and violence down the generations.

Sat 30 October - Manchester United vs. Tottenham, kick-off 5.30pm
