New production
Bellini’s work of genius tells the tragic love story of priestess Norma and Pollione, the father of her two children. Having kept their relationship a secret, Norma’s love turns into bitter hate when she learns that Pollione is betraying her. Determined to take revenge, she finds herself entrapped in a web of intrigues, obsessions, lies and religious obligation, with the ultimate sacrifice being the only escape.
Far piangere cantando – moving audiences to tears through the art of singing was the aim of composer Vincenzo Bellini. Norma, his ecstatic, action-packed masterpiece does just that. Telling a fantastically dramatic story about love, betrayal, revenge, and containing one of the most prized of all soprano arias, Casta Diva, Norma will melt even the coldest heart.
Having made legends out of Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland, the role of Norma has always been the ultimate work for prima donnas and the maker of global opera stars.
This new production stars the amazing Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer in the title role and is directed by Christopher Alden.
Lasts approximately 3 hours.
“Alden has drawn a strikingly vivid performance from the Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer in the title-role.”

“Vital to the success of Christopher Alden's new production for Opera North is the priestess of Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer. Her ample, wide-ranging voice keeps faith with Bellini's notes, maintaining dramatic intensity via seriousness of artistic purpose and commitment.”
