One Man, Two Guvnors Teacher CPD: Commedia dell’Arte
Fri 14 October
This full-day workshop will explore key components of the Commedia dell'arte tradition and demonstrate how they can be adapted as useful tools for actors and students of all ages.
Course leader Didi Hopkins trained in Commedia with Carlo Boso in Italy and France and has been instrumental in keeping the tradition alive in the vocabulary of schools, teachers, colleges and universities. She has taught and directed Commedia at the National Theatre, London Mime Festival and at drama schools throughout the UK and abroad.
Inspired by One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean's new adaptation of Carlo Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters, the course will:
• investigate the roots of Commedia dell'arte, including improvisation, physical theatre, storytelling, mask and spectacle.
• touch upon how these have been adapted through pantomime, music hall and variety to create the archetypes of today.
• offer ideas for how these techniques can be applied in a variety of contexts, helping students explore character types and relationships.
• explore how the world of commedia can be a useful tool for the world of text.
