Rambert return to The Lowry this May with three contrasting short pieces, each one a first

For its Spring tour 2022, Rambert brings together into one evening three contrasting short pieces that all connect directly with the audience. This includes the first ever performance of Alonzo King’s work by a UK dance company; the world premiere of a Ben Duke creation and a reworking from livestream to stage.

This new programme premieres at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro early May, before a London premiere at Sadler’s Wells on the 18th May. It will then tour to The Lowry, Salford from Wednesday 25 – Friday 27 May.

Since David and Venus, we’ve put the human body on the highest pedestal, shaping and perpetuating an unattainable beauty standard. Eye Candy by former NDT dancers and up-and-coming choreographic sibling duo Imre and Marne van Opstal shows the pains and the pleasures of inhabiting the human body through a modern lens. Originally created for the camera and live-streamed in July 2021 on Rambert Home Studio, Eye Candy is revisited for the stage, marking the van Opstal siblings’ choreographic stage debut here in the UK.

Following on the success of Goat, his first collaboration with Rambert for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2018, Ben Duke returns to Rambert for a new creation, Cerberus, that combines his signature theatrical stamp on dance with spoken word and surreal comedy. Taking inspiration from concepts of ancient myths and some of the more personal stories of the Rambert dancers, Cerberus is an unexpected collision of comedy and tragedy and how they can intersect in our modern lives. The piece features three musicians on stage, percussionist Romana Campbell, Soprano Rebecca Leggett and classical guitarist George Robinson.

Rambert closes the evening with Alonzo King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream, marking the first time a UK company performs the work of one of the USA’s most recognised and acclaimed choreographers. In King’s own words, “everything that exists in nature is seeking to return to its source. The child runs to its parents, and the river seeks the ocean.” Human beings have one thing in common – we want a happiness that is ever fulfilling and never goes stale. Joy is the goal. King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream is about how to return to joy.
