About The Exhibitions Programme
The Lowry is a place where art and people meet. You can see the best in the visual arts presented in lively and engaging ways. The familiar is juxtaposed with the unfamiliar alongside exhibitions exploring the Lowry collections, there is a programme of modern and contemporary art of diversity and appeal. There are up to 16 exhibitions per year, each generally lasts for 3 months, with occasional shorter projects and events.
The Lowry collection is not presented in a static way; displays change regularly, so there is always a reason to come back and discover more. Temporary exhibitions complement the collections, sometimes through themed exhibitions about the urban or industrial environment, empty landscapes, or contemporaries of LS Lowry.

The flexible galleries provide ideal settings for prestigious international exhibitions - for instance, Carnival of Colour presented work by an Italian futurist artist, Fortunato Depero. Although he was a contemporary of Lowry, the work they produced and their artistic concerns could hardly be more different. Depero's profuse output and his work with theatre and ballet mirror The Lowry's role as a home for all aspects of creativity. Artists are sometimes invited to create new work especially for exhibitions. For the inaugural contemporary exhibition, The Double, Irish artist Alice Maher made a huge 4-metre high charcoal drawing directly on the walls.
Exhibitions sometimes complement other aspects of the work of The Lowry: a Japanese printmaking exhibition alongside a production of Kabuki theatre; a hugely popular exhibition of props created by Forkbeard Fantasy theatre company as part of a lively summer festival of interdisciplinary art.

Exhibitions and the collections are always very popular with schools and community groups and a lively programme of creative activities takes place in the Galleries and as outreach projects to encourage understanding of and engagement with the work on show. Sometimes these result in small exhibitions or events.
