Painting A Coming From The Mill

Painting A Coming From The Mill
'Coming from the Mill, 1930' is one of L S Lowry's best-known industrial scenes. For all the fame of the finished work, very little was known about how it was conceived and painted. The artist was secretive about his working methods; he left almost no unfinished pictures and revealed little about his techniques to curators, journalists or friends. To unravel this mystery, art conservator Edwin Bowes set himself the challenge of painting a replica of 'Coming from the Mill', using materials and techniques as similar as possible to those favoured by Lowry: high quality linen canvas, restricted palette, the finest hog and sable brushes. In this facinating study the results of his quest are revealed. This book will interest not only admirers of Lowry's paintings but also artists wishing to try their hand at recreating this industrial masterpiece.
