The Lowry Collection

The Lowry houses the largest public collection of works by LS Lowry in the world. Comprising around 400 items, it includes oil paintings, drawings, pastels and watercolours. The collection represents the wide range of subject matter depicted by the artist, from classic industrial scenes to seascapes, landscapes and portraits, among which are Lowry’s self portrait as well as the oil paintings of his mother and father which he kept on display in his home throughout his life.

The collection represents all periods of LS Lowry’s career, from early still life studies and life drawings, to industrial landscapes and later, small, figure groups.

The collection was amassed by Salford Museum & Art Gallery from the 1930s onwards. In 2000 the collection was transferred from Salford Museum to The Lowry and a selection of works, Lowry Favourites, is permanently on display in the Galleries.

Alongside these are paintings and drawings on loan from private individuals and other public museums and art galleries. In addition there is a stunning group of works on loan from the Lowry Estate.

Admission to Lowry Favourites is free but a donation is suggested to help towards the conservation and development of the collection.
