My Favourite L S Lowry

Harry Hill, comedian, chose:

Mill Scene, 1959, oil Lent by Glossopdale Community College Association

"This is very similar to a Lowry scene I copied from a postcard for my Nan when I was 14. I thought the original must be tiny. Nan hung my Lowry on the wall in her front room and some of her friends thought it was the real thing."

Sally Whittaker, 'Sally Webster' in Coronation Street, chose:

Whitweek Procession, Swinton, 1921, oil

Lent by a private collector

"I chose this because it's not a typical Lowry. The paint strokes are very thick and the colour very simple - probably because all the dresses of the girls taking part are white. I remember Whit Walks when I was a child and loved the excitement of the day."

Loyd Grossman, TV presenter and Chair of the Campaign for Museums, chose:

Seascape, oil, 1952

The Lowry Collection, Salford

"My choice is from the less well known area of Lowry's work. His seascapes are tranquil and serene - so different from the clichéd Northern industrial landscapes many people associate with his name."
