The Lowry - Shortlisted for Tourism Award

The British Guild of Travel Writers has Highly Commended The Lowry for its Silver Unicorn Award 2000 for the Best Tourism Project in the UK.

The award is presented to innovative projects that attract tourists and benefit the local community and environment. Nominated by travel writer Terry Marsh, The Lowry reflects a growing concern amongst Travel Guild members for the promotion of responsible tourism.

The other shortlisted projects are both in London - The Tate Modern and The Wetland Centre. The development designed to attract wetland wildlife for the appreciation of tourists was recently announced as the overall winner at the Annual Awards dinner. This event took place at the Savoy hotel where representatives from the short-listed projects were presented with awards by Martin Roberts, Chaiman of the British guild of Travel Writers and TV presenter on Wish you were Here.

Over the years the Silver Unicorn Awards have been presented to an extraordinarily wide range of projects from major museums to tiny community tourism developments and has helped significantly boost the standings of often little-known achievements.

The Lowry has exceeded all expectations with over half a million visitors in its opening six months. This architectural flagship, housing the visual and performing arts often described as Salford’s Guggenheim, is proving to be a destination it its own right, attracting people from across the UK and around the world.

The Lowry has also joined forces with The Trafford Centre, Manchester United and the Quality Hotel to create Attraction Packed Manchester, a unique weekend break package for visitors to the region.

A £105.9 million project, The Lowry itself attracted £68.9 million from the National Lottery with unique partnership funding by The Arts Council of England (£44.6m), The Millennium Commission (£15.65m) and The Heritage Lottery Fund (£8.65m).
