Happy Birthday to The Lowry
"Art is the new religion & The Lowry is the new cathedral"
As The Lowry approaches its second birthday (Sunday 28th April) Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of England has described the stunning architectural landmark building as the "new cathedral".
In a recent key-note speech*, Peter Hewitt talked about the role of the arts in the post-September 11 world, which was a catalyst for many things, not least a new wave of art appreciation. "Art has a vital role to play to connect us to a deeper sense of meaning. Poems are a modern form of prayer. Art provides the setting for modern communion. It is no cliché to see Tate Modern, The Lowry and The Baltic as the new cathedrals."
On Sunday 28th April it will be 2 years since The Lowry opened its doors to the public, during which time it has welcomed approximately 1.8 million visitors from the UK, overseas and its local communities. This success looks set to continue as commercial market forecasts show the Quays attracting 4 million visitors per annum by 2004.
The Lowry has acted as a catalyst for regenerating the Quays, creating an exciting new leisure and business destination. The theatre & gallery events have proved extremely popular which is reflected in the astounding 24 awards and accolades to date for the building, its programme and activities. It also has a wide community appeal with projects and activities embracing those in formal education and others who are life long learners.
On its second birthday, The Lowry presents the National Premiere of Britain's first ever South Asian Music Youth Orchestra, Sam-Yo!, embarking on a new partnership with Milapfest, a vibrant, innovative South Asian Arts Festival featuring exciting dance, music and theatre events. Something for everyone is the key to The Lowry's success.
