Four More M.E.N Theatre Awards for
The Lowry

      The glittering Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards ceremony 2002 held yesterday (Tues 3 Dec), was a resounding success for The Lowry who won four awards, from 15 nominations in six categories.

      The Lowry totally dominated the Dance category with 3 out of the 4 nominations, who were all international companies. The world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem won BEST DANCE with their out-standing Triple Bill, sponsored by Manchester Airport. They came up against stiff competition from other Dance at The Lowry - Nederlands Dans Theater 2 and Mark Morris in addition to English National Ballet's Double Concerto by Christopher Hampson at The Opera House.

      Best Visiting Actor

      was awarded to Timothy West for his magnificent performance in ETT's King Lear at The Lowry in October. Another nominee for his performance at The Lowry was Mark Webber in The Distance From Here (Almeida Theatre). They were up against Patrick Malahide in Hinterland and Matthew Rhys in The Associate, both performances at Bolton Octagon.

      The Lowry also won BEST VISITING ACTRESS with Diana Quick's spectacular performance in ETT's Ghosts. Three out of five of her fellow nominees were also nominated for their performances at The Lowry, Mel B, Nina Wadia and Ingeborga Dapkunaite for The Vagina Monologues, Catrin Rhys in To Kill A Mockingbird and Yolanda Vasquez in A Midsummer Night's Dream. The other nominees were Tina Malone in Mum's the Word at The opera House and Alison Pargeter in Damsels in Distress at Bolton Octagon.

      The Lowry has won BEST VISITING PRODUCTION every year since The Lowry opened (2000, 2001 & 2002). This year it was with Clwyd Theatr Cymru's production of To Kill A Mockingbird and once again came up against three other productions at The Lowry. These were The Distance From Here (Almeida Theatre Company), Stones in his Pockets and ETT's King Lear. They were competing against The Associate (National Theatre) and Damsels in Distress (Stephen Joseph Theatre) both at Bolton Octagon.

      The Lowry's Theatre programme received an outstanding number of nominations (15) for the highly acclaimed MEN Theatre Awards, one more than the incredible 14 nominations they received last year.
