The Lowry's Big Day
The first programme in ITV’s Granada’s new documentary series, The Big Day, scheduled for broadcast on Thursday 28th October at 7.30pm, features The Lowry’s most ambitious community production to date, Love on the Dole.
Granada TV went behind the scenes at The Lowry, ‘fly on the wall’ style, filming rehearsals and building up to opening night - The Big Day. They interviewed various performers preparing at home, travelling to The Lowry and in the dressing rooms, giving the local people involved the chance to tell their own story!
The decision to stage Love on the Dole as a community play is the latest stage in The Lowry forging a strong, lasting relationship with Salford. Love on the Dole involved over 100 local people from a range of backgrounds, who all helped to bring this classic Salford story to life.
Robert Robson, The Lowry’s Artistic Director comments “Love on the Dole was a wonderful project for everyone involved in the development process as well as for the audiences seeing the final production. We were thrilled when Granada recognised the significance of the project and became involved in documenting the process.”
Following on from this success, The Lowry is inviting cast members back to feedback from their involvement and discuss developing our own community theatre company.
This is one of the possibilities created by The Studio, the brand new £2.5 million hub at The Lowry, allowing the venue to expand the education and community activities on offer.
The Big Day focuses on 8 very different special events in peoples lives. Each half hour focuses on a person or a group of people who are working towards a significant day that may change their lives forever, from appearing at The Lowry, to breaking the Blind land Speed record, to celebrating your 9th birthday when you never thought you’d see your 5th!!
