The Lowry Celebrates Its 5th Birthday

To celebrate the fifth anniversary since The Lowry arts complex on Salford Quays opened to great public and critical acclaim, it’s offering fantastic family fun for a fiver with crazy clowns in the theatre plus the launch of two special commissions, Phantasmagoria (visually dazzling illusionism) and Outside In (a flock of animatronic birds).

In the theatre, for one night only on Thursday 28 April, the award winning Edinburgh fringe show Paper World sees Mimirichi, a troupe of four manic clowns from the Ukraine literally tearing the place up before encouraging the audience to join in with the paper based mayhem.

To celebrate The Lowry’s fifth birthday, all seats are just £5!

Specially created by the internationally renowned Whalley Range All Stars to animate the building, the Outside flies into The Lowry with a flock of eight fascinating animatronic birds, which are unique, intriguing, quirky and fun. Inspired by the design of The Lowry with its labyrinth of escalators, tall spaces and bright colours they decided to treated it as a giant walk-in aviary that you find in modern zoos, resulting in Outside In.

Specially commissioned to celebrate The Lowry’s 5th birthday, artists Brass Art are filling the Deck gallery with light and sound, taking Salford landscape as their inspiration. They have produced a rotating, panoramic video installation of the local skyline, which opens on 28 April and shows until 26 June. A newly commissioned sound track, from Matt Wand using the sound of a glass armonica, completes the experience.

All reflect the diversity and originality of The Lowry, which since opening in 2000 has brought a wealth of visual and performing arts to the North West. It quickly established itself as a national icon as well as an integral part of the local community and is now widely acknowledged as one of the most vibrant visual and performing arts venues in the UK. The building's iconic exterior and innovative interior design dynamically fused the aesthetic with the artistic to create a unique cultural centre, which has been honoured regionally and nationally with over 40 prestigious architectural, tourism and cultural awards.

Julia Fawcett, The Lowry’s Chief Executive, “We’re extremely proud of our artistic achievements over the 5 years since The Lowry opened and believe we’re the only venue outside London offering such an exciting and dynamic programme of events. We look forward to continuing our commitment to developing our artistic offer and attracting world-class entertainment to the North West region.”

Mimirichi’s Paperworld one-off showing at The Lowry is on Thursday 28 April at 7.30pm and all tickets are just £5. Phantasmagoria is open late on Thursday 28 April, from 6 – 8pm. The Galleries are open everyday 11am – 5pm (10am – 5pm on Saturdays). Admission to the Galleries is FREE. On arrival, visitors need an admission ticket from the Galleries Desk. We encourage donations to support the Galleries and the care of the LS Lowry Collection.
