Family shows in The Lowry’s Studio Theatre
The Lowry offers a wealth of family entertainment this season in its third theatre space, The Studio, designed to present the best in small-scale, high quality drama, comedy, music and dance.
The Studio, which houses classrooms and studio space is also home to The Lowry’s Community & Education team, who organise a wide range of in-house and outreach activities for schools, families and community groups.
This season family shows in The Studio range from puppet theatre and Opera North’s The Pied Piper to Private Peaceful, an inspiring story by Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo plus Italy’s most influential children’s theatre company.

Baba Yaga Boney Legs
Exciting puppetry, masks and live performance adventure story about Baba Yaga, a crazy Russian witch. Her house rampages through the woods on a pair of chicken legs and her fence is made of bones and skellys. When Lisa is captured by the Baba Yaga, her only hope is her magical doll and her own cunning.

Rumpelstiltskin
Using puppets, props and storytelling, this magical new show tells the tale made famous by the Brothers Grimm. Unless the miller’s daughter can turn straw into gold, she will die. In her misery, a strange little fellow appears and offers his help.

Opera North Education
The Pied Piper – Opera for Children
This exciting newly-commissioned small-scale opera is created as part of the work conducted by Opera North Education. Jane Buckler’s libretto retells the famous legend with a score inspired by eastern European folk music, written by Kate Pearson. This production is performed by a professional cast and will feature a chorus from a local primary school.

Lyngo Theatre Company and La Baracca
The Birdy and the Eagle
Following the success of The Fish’s Wishes, Lyngo Theatre return to The Lowry. When this Alaskan egg hatches, all the other animals help teach Birdy how to flap his wings and fly. But something is watching and looking out for breakfast. It’s a show full of Lyngo’s magical transformations and surprises mixed with the 20 years’ experience of La Baracca, the most influential children’s theatre company in Italy.

Scamp Theatre Limited presents the Bristol Old Vic production
Private Peaceful
This inspiring story is the latest by Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, who was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were shot for cowardice during the First World War. Private Tommy Peaceful is a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past and the injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

TPO in Collaboration with Rebwar Saeed and Lyric Hammersmith
The Kurdish Garden
Leading European theatre makers TPO and stunning visual artist Rebwar Saeed present an exciting new show full of digital animation, video illusions, music, storytelling and poetry. Rebwar is a painter who has travelled from Kurdistan with his magical carpet. Join him and dancers Anna and Luisa as they guide you across that carpet. Each step you take triggers images and sounds leading you through a colourful world of five special gardens.

Other family shows at The Lowry, staged in the larger spaces of the Lyric and Quays theatres include Horrible Histories (Tue 11 – Sat 15 October), World Cup Final 1966, the behind-the-scenes and on-the-pitch story of that match (Tue 18 – Sat 22 Oct) and Arthur, the Story of a King (13 – Sat 17 Sep). Plus this Christmas, the ever popular Pele productions return with Cinderella (9 Dec ‘05 – 9 Jan ‘06), starring Coronation Street’s Lucy Jo Hudson in the title role and Faith Brown as The Wicked Stepmother.
As well as the shows for families The Lowry offers lots of activities designed for families (children aged 5 – 11) to take part in together. Many of them take place in The Studio and are very popular so booking is advised for any non drop in style activities.
