THE LOWRY LAUNCHES TWO MAJOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS
THE LOWRY LAUNCHES TWO MAJOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS
• MASS OBSERVATION DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
• WORLD PREMIERE OF OH WOT A LOVELY WAR?
Following on from 2004's huge success, Love on the Dole - a fantastic production developed in and performed by the local community - this month, The Lowry is launching two more large scale community projects, the creation of a new production about the War on Terror and a historic mass observation photography project.
These projects will last for several months at a time and be a real team effort between professional artists working with The Lowry and Salford and Greater Manchester communities. The Lowry is looking for people to get involved at all levels and no previous artistic or acting experience is required to get involved in either project. Interested participants just need plenty of enthusiasm and to be aged over 18.
OH WOT A LOVELY WAR?
Taking inspiration from the ground breaking collaborative working style of Joan Littlewood and her Theatre Workshop company of actors and writers – who created the original award-winning First World War musical, Oh, What A Lovely War – the cast and director will use the resources of Imperial War museum North and contemporary sources to create a unique piece of theatre.
The creative process of this project will include interviews with those who have personal accounts of war, involvement in script development, acting, music, dance and design. This will culminate in a period of rehearsals and a world première performance in the Quays theatre at The Lowry in April 2006.
PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT- WORKTOWN
As part of The Lowry’s FIRST EVER mass observation project, professional local photographers, Paula Keenan and Jon Purcell will team up with local residents to create work that captures the different sides and the spirit of Salford.
Finished pieces from across the city will come together to form a spectacular exhibition at The Lowry in September 2006.
The photographs will also serve as an archive resource so that future generations can see what life was like in Salford in 2006.
