Great Expectations

Northern Stage returns to The Lowry with a unique interpretation of Charles Dickens’ classic

Great Expectations, The Lowry, Salford Quays
Tue 31 January – Sat 4 February
Press night: Tue 31 January, 7pm

Although firmly located in the 1830’s, Northern Stage’s Great Expectations is fresh and exciting, using film, music and the unique Northern Stage style of ensemble storytelling to create an inspiring interpretation of this Dickens classic. The production tours to The Lowry from Tue 31 January to Sat 4 February 2006.

John Clifford’s fine adaptation of this compelling story captures all of the anguish, fragility and striking characters that drive Dickens’ powerful story forward at lightening pace. The cast includes Sue Maud (Mike Figgis’ Miss Julie and Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) and Julia Dakin (known to Doctor Who fans as Hannah Fry in the audio series featuring Peter Davison and David Walliams).

Running wild and scared on the marshes, orphan Pip encounters the convict Abel Magwitch – on the run and desperate. It is a meeting that will return to haunt Pip in his adult life and turn upside down everything he has come to believe.

The nightmarish atmosphere of the marshes, the magnificent gothic mystery of Miss Haversham’s Satis House and the bustling thrill of London are recreated by a cast of eleven in director and designer Neil Murray’s magnificent set and stylish costumes.

Northern Stage has previously visited The Lowry with productions of A Clockwork Orange and the George Orwell classics Animal Farm and 1984.

Classic FM recommended.
