The Barber of Seville was Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’s first comic work and first successful play. At The Lowry on Tuesday 19 September, Barber, directed by Ptolemy Christie, is a comedy of intrigue, disguise and mishap as the Count Almaviva rescues his intended bride from the clutches of her elderly guardian Dr Bartolo.

This witty and entertaining production, with some of Opera’s most famous tunes, will be performed by a cast of exciting young artists including James McOran Campbell taking the role of Figaro, a jack-of-all-trades, who helps the Count to win Rosina. McOran Campbell is joined by Freddie Tong and Nick Sharratt who also thrilled audiences in 2005 with Pimlico Opera’s Elixir of Love tour.

Pimlico Opera is one of the country’s leading small-scale touring opera companies. The Company provides valuable performing experience for younger artists in operas with high production values. Landmark productions include the first British performance of Shostakovich's musical comedy Cheryomushki, a satire on life in a 1950's Moscow housing estate which was the subject of a BBC documentary and nominated for a BAFTA award.

The Young Artists programme offers young singers, through the generosity of its sponsors, the opportunity to perform principal roles. The reaction from both the critics and the opera community continues to drive the programme to achieve greater opportunities for young singers and higher artistic standards in the future.
