In recognition of The Lowry’s first major co-commissioned production, King Cotton, it has created a dedicated website with up to the minute information about the production phase of the show. Website users can log onto www.kingcotton.co.uk to view exclusive interviews with the writer Jimmy McGovern and other members of the creative team. The website also features music from King Cotton, casting announcements, the latest on-set news, downloads and online booking.
Viewers can watch an interview with Jimmy McGovern explaining how he got involved in the project, “There was a man called Ian Brownbill who said to me, ‘Have I got a story for you’, upon which I promptly died and thought ‘Oh my God, if I had a pound for the number of times I’ve heard that’. But the story was that of the Lancashire cotton famine which stunned Jimmy and he became immersed in telling the tale himself, “as a writer I retain the right to tell a story because it’s a great story and this was undeniably a very good story.”
From the King Cotton site, users can subscribe to regular email updates of King Cotton and also utilise the opportunity to book tickets early for other shows coming to The Lowry.
King Cotton is set to be the unmissable theatre event of the year with a cast drawn from stage and screen, including Manchester born actor and ex-dustman, John Henshaw, in his most unusual role ever – as God! John is one of television’s familiar faces, having appeared as Anthony’s uppity father-in-law, Roger Kavanagh, in the The Royle Family and recently played John Prescott in TV’s Confessions of a Diary Secretary.
This inspirational tale is directed by Jude Kelly, former Artistic Director of West Yorkshire Playhouse, currently Artistic Director of London’s South Bank Centre and one of the most dynamic and innovative theatre and opera directors of recent times.
King Cotton is produced by The Lowry and co-commissioned by The Lowry and the Liverpool Culture Company. King Cotton is supported by The National Lottery through Arts Council England.
