The stylish 1930s classic drama Dangerous Corner, written by J.B. Priestly, promises an evening of romance, suspense and intrigue at The Lowry this September.

This fast-paced drama stars film and television favourite Shirley Anne Field, Emmerdale’s Peter Amory (Chris Tate), The Bill’s Tony O’Callaghan (Sergeant Matthew Boyden) and Chloe Newsome (Victoria McDonald, Coronation Street

Bolton-born Shirley Anne Field got her big break playing the young beauty queen in the film of The Entertainer opposite Sir Laurence Olivier. Her many film roles include the likes of Saturday Night, Sunday Morning with Albert Finney; The War Lover with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner; Man in the Moon with Kenneth Moore; Kings of the Sun with Yul Brynner and Alfie with Michael Caine and Doctor in Clover. Her more recent films include My Beautiful Launderette; Hear My Song; A Monkey’s Tale and The Good Doctor.

The story unfolds as Robert Caplan (Tony O’Callaghan) and his wife are entertaining her brother and sister-in-law. As the evening develops Robert insists on uncovering the truth about his brother’s ‘suicide’, and many unpalatable revelations ensue. Family skeletons come crashing out of the closet as the more Robert finds out the more his memories are corrupted.

His brother is revealed as an obscene lunatic whom his wife adored, his business partners (whom Robert previously liked and admired) are discovered to be both unbalanced and dishonest, and a girl he used to idealize is found to be just a cheap tart.

Robert’s insistence on probing for the absolute truth destroys him. However, just as he reaches breaking point, a twist in time occurs and we are transported back to the beginning where the opportunity is given for the characters to bypass the dangerous corner at which the truth was demanded.

Dangerous Corner was the first play by Bradford-born Priestley, pre-dating his famous success with An Inspector Calls. He also penned numerous popular novels and more than fifty plays, the most notable including Time and the Conways and When We Are Married.
