Rambert Dance Company World View Tour 2007

The Lowry, Wed 26 – Sat 29 September 2007
Press Night: Wed 26 September, 7.30pm

Rambert Dance Company
, Britain’s flagship modern dance company, returns to The Lowry this September with their World View Tour. This year’s visit offers a number of delights including the world première of Infinity, Garry Stewart’s first work for Rambert, Gran Partita by Karole Armitage – the choreographer of Madonna’s Vogue video - and the return of the Lowry-commissioned work Stand and Stare, which premièred in Salford last year to great acclaim.

Australian choreographer Garry Stewart has been Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre – one of the country’s most influential dance companies – since 1999 and is famed for his powerful and athletic approach to choreography. In Stewart’s first work for Rambert Dance Company, he explores the dramatic and often brutal passage towards death, through an avalanche of striking and relentless physical imagery. As a recognition of The Lowry’s special relationship with Rambert, we are delighted that this new work will receive it’s world première in Salford.

American choreographer Karole Armitage has created Gran Partita for Rambert, which is set to Mozart’s profound and beautiful score of the same name. Capturing the verve and beauty of the music in movement, this emotional and dramatic piece complements Mozart’s heart-melting sound. The celebrated designer Jean Marc Puissant’s fresh scenery and costumes create a dreamy poetic world.

Famously Christened as the “punk ballerina” of New York by Vanity Fair, Karole Armitage choreographed Madonna’s Vogue video. She has also worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, art and film, as well as world renowned dance companies. Karole’s highly-regarded work is rarely seen in the UK so this is a thrilling opportunity for British audiences to catch one of the world’s leading choreographers.

Stand and Stare by Darshan Singh Bhuller returns to the home of its première, following a very successful year of touring with Rambert Dance Company. In 2006, The Lowry commissioned Rambert to produce a work based on the life and work of LS Lowry, and Darshan’s abstract interpretations have captured imaginations across the UK. Béla Bartók’s rhythmic and compelling Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion provides the ideal tone for Darshan’s powerful and exhilarating choreography.

An exciting addition to Rambert’s autumn repertoire is a new work from Rambert dancer-choreographer Melanie Teall, L’eveil. Created in July this year for Rambert’s 2007 Workshop Season, L’eveil is an abstract piece for six women, inspired loosely by aspects of femininity and influenced by the power of the female voice through song. It is performed to Kurt Weill’s Je ne t’aime pas and Leslie Bricusse’s Feeling Good (made famous by Nina Simone), with costumes inspired by world-renowned fashion designer Roland Mouret.

Rambert Dance Company prides itself on the scale and variety of music offered within the repertoire. Its award-winning Associate Orchestra, London Musici, accompanies Rambert on tour, performing live for Gran Partita and Stand and Stare. In 2004, Rambert’s Music Director Paul Hoskins and London Musici won theTime Out Live Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

The World View Tour 2007 has an international flavour, offering a diverse fusion of ideas, choreography and music from across the world. International choreographers feature alongside the best of British talent, and sources of inspiration range from Mozart and contemporary art, to the natural cycles of life and death. Rambert Dance Company is constantly evolving, and this exhilarating and dramatic season has been inspired by the people and world around us.
