Local Community invited to be part of a new Lowry exhibition

A Big Brother-style ‘Diary Room’ will give the local community a chance to have their say about LS Lowry’s paintings in a forthcoming exhibition, Exploding Paintings at The Lowry.

Designed in the style of a terraced house, the diary room will take the form of a mobile video booth. This will enable The Lowry to go out into the community to record local people’s thoughts on Lowry’s paintings. The diary room will be on tour at The Ordsall Festival, on Sat 22 Sept and The Lowry’s Walkabout event Portrait Pictures on Sat 6 Oct at Lancashire Martyrs’ Church Hall, Little Hulton. The footage will then be incorporated into the Exploding Paintings exhibition being developed at The Lowry.

Portrait Pictures is one of the many events, forming part of The Lowry’s Walkabout project in Little Hulton. In the diary room, people will be asked to give their opinion on three Lowry paintings. They will also be asked for their views about living in Little Hulton. At Lancashire Martyrs’ Church Hall, The Kenyon Way Residents’ Association will also be taking portraits in traditional or alternative styles for £2. Those wanting to book in advance can call Kenyon Residents’ Shop on 0161 799 5863.

Exploding Paintings will open at The Lowry on Sat 8 December 2007 and show until Sun 9 March 2008. The exhibition will take a closer look at three Lowry paintings: Pit Tragedy, Portrait of Ann and Industrial Landscape. Each picture will be the subject of the personal view points of a social historian, biographer, art historian and a spectrum of Salford children and residents. Each of the paintings will be hung with other contextual works from The Lowry’s collection, and will also be supported by appropriate photographs and artefacts.

Since the beginning of this year, The Lowry’s Walkabout outreach project has been using creative activity in Little Hulton to develop opportunities for participation and social engagement in the community. Walkabout involves partnerships with several organisations across the city including Salford City Council and Salford Primary Care Trust Health Improvement as well as funding from Safer Stronger Communities.
