DICK WHITTINGTON

The Lowry, Fri 7 December 2007 – Sun 6 January 2008 Press night, Tue 11 December, 7pm

All the sparkle and fun of a traditional Christmas panto will be at The Lowry in December (Fri 7 Dec – Sun 6 Jan) with a star-studded Dick Whittington.

Darren Day, Chesney Hawkes and former Emmerdale actors Stephanie Dooley and Frazer Hines lead the way in a tale of adventure and romance that concludes, naturally, with a happy ending. It will be a panto debut for Chesney Hawkes (Dick Whittington) who shot to fame in 1991 when he starred in the film ‘Buddy's Song' alongside Roger Daltrey and Michael Elphick. The soundtrack featured ‘The One and Only,’ a song which catapulted Chesney to the top of the charts and kept him among the best-sellers for almost four months. Chesney is now a successful songwriter working with numerous artists including A1, Hear’Say and Tricky.

Top TV and musical artist Darren Day turns bad guy in the role of King Rat. Darren got his first big break as Joseph in Joseph and Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in the early nineties. Since then he has appeared in a string of successful musicals and his TV appearances have included ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ and ‘The Bill.’

Alongside Darren as the fairy will be his off-stage wife Stephanie Dooley who he met in panto two years ago. Stephanie was a familiar face in Yorkshire TV’s Emmerdale in which she played secretary Zara Baynard.

Frazer Hines (Alderman Fitzwarren) is one of TV’s most familiar faces, renowned for his roles in two of the small screen’s most popular shows: Dr Who and Emmerdale. He was the side-kick of the second doctor, Patrick Troughton, from 1966 to 1969. His next big TV break was as Joe Sugden in Emmerdale from 1972 to 1994.

Amid energetic dance routines and stunning laser effects, Dick Whittington goes to seek fame and fortune in the city of London where, he is told, the streets are paved with gold. Picking his way through the good, the bad - and the ridiculous - Dick eventually overcomes all obstacles to find his sweetheart and finally become Lord Mayor of London. It has all the Christmas sparkle expected from a panto produced by The Lowry and Pelé Productions.

Tickets are on sale now for Dick Whittington (Fri 7 Dec – 6 Jan) and with up to 2 children going half price with every full priced adult ticket, the very best family entertainment in the North West also provides really great value for money. Tickets are available on 0870 787 5793 and online bookings via www.thelowry.com.
