Exploding Paintings
Local community have their say in a new Lowry exhibition
Exploding Paintings
The Lowry, Sat 8 December 2007 – Sun 9 March 2008
The views of Salford people will be incorporated into Exploding Paintings, a new exhibition on show at The Lowry this winter.
Exploding Paintings will take a close look at three LS Lowry paintings: Pit Tragedy, Portrait of Ann and Industrial Landscape. A social historian, biographer and art historian interpret the paintings from their own personal view points alongside a spectrum of Salford children and residents. Each of the paintings will be hung with other contextual works from The Lowry’s collection, as well as relevant photographs and artefacts.
A Big Brother-style diary room, in the shape of a terraced house, recorded local people’s thoughts on the three Lowry paintings. It visited the Ordsall Festival in September and The Lowry’s recent Walkabout event in Little Hulton. The footage which shows comments from the local community will be incorporated into this new exhibition.
The Lowry offers an exhibition programme of modern and contemporary visual art of diversity and appeal. At the heart of the Lowry Galleries is the LS Lowry Collection, presented to maintain Lowry’s position as the most popular and best loved of British 20th century artists, as well as increase his reputation as an important figure in the history of art. The LS Lowry Collection is presented in a dynamic way, with regularly changing displays encouraging visitors to take a fresh look at the artist.
Alongside the LS Lowry Collection are exhibitions, which place emphasis on the work of contemporary artists, photography and the locality and context of The Lowry. These shows often complement the LS Lowry Collection, focusing on, for example, the urban or industrial environment, or the art of Lowry’s contemporaries.
