Greenhouse

Festive flora and fun at The Lowry

… Greenhouse

The Lowry, Sat 1 December 2007 – Sun 20 April 2008 Launch Day 1 December 2007

From Saturday 1 December The Lowry building will be transformed into a giant Greenhouse, with huge inflatable plants and flowers filling the foyer spaces. Visual artists, Spacecadets, have fashioned these rare carnivorous creations. Some will be animated, opening and closing like Venus fly traps, whilst others will be illuminated from within, creating a radiant spectacle of inflatable art.

To celebrate the launch of this humungous hothouse there will be a free day of family fun from colourful art workshops to exciting competitions. Spacecadets will be on hand in the Studio foyer to assist any green-fingered enthusiasts make their own weird and wonderful potted plant to take home. There will also be a chance to win a family ticket to see Dick Whittington, The Lowry’s pop pantomime starring Darren Day and Chesney Hawkes, by visiting the galleries and entering a competition.

From 5pm along the Gallery Promenade, children from All Souls RC Primary School and Irlam Endowed Primary School in Salford will race customised remote control cars created in workshops with Spacecadets. Artwork created by a craft group based at Buille Hill Park can be seen in the Studio Foyer and a visit to the Potting shed in the Studio foyer is also a must to fill in a feedback flower!

Complementing the Greenhouse exhibition, Spacecadets have made 11 incredible inflatable Christmas trees, ranging in height up to 18 feet, to populate The Lowry building. Illuminated from within by multi-coloured flashing lights, they will complete the building’s festive feeling.
