Celebrate Christmas at The Lowry

Celebrate Christmas at The Lowry …

Christmas has arrived at The Lowry with plenty of things to see and do to keep everybody entertained over the holidays. With the building open every day except Christmas day, The Lowry provides the perfect retreat from too much turkey and television repeats. From a visit to the galleries to see our newly opened exhibition, Exploding Paintings to a trip down memory lane with the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, or a chance to pick up some last minute Christmas presents in the gift shop, The Lowry has something to offer for all the family.

Our all-star pop pantomime, Dick Whittington, kicks off the festive fun on Fri 7 December. Starring ‘the one and only’ Chesney Hawkes in his pantomime debut, King Rat Darren Day and his real-life wife Stephanie Dooley, former Emmerdale star Frazer Hines and multi-award-winning comedian John Bishop, this magical tale is a Christmas cracker not to be missed.

The Quays Theatre will be home over the holidays to the stage recreation of TV classic, Dad’s Army. Two classic episodes, not seen since 1969, have been revived by Calibre Productions along with ‘The Deadly Attachment’ - the unforgettable episode with the “Don’t tell ‘em your name, Pike!” moment. The Home Guard will be detached to Salford from Tue 11 December for a week longer than originally planned so that enthusiasts of one of the most popular and revered TV comedies of all time can catch it until Sat 5 January 2008.

Visual artists, Spacecadets, have created a humungous hothouse in the foyer spaces of The Lowry. The Greenhouse exhibition consists of vast inflatable plants and flowers, illuminated from inside and animated to open and close, transforming The Lowry into a gigantic conservatory. Spacecadets complement their Greenhouse with 11 incredible inflatable Christmas trees, ranging in height up to 18 feet. Illuminated from within by multi-coloured flashing lights, they complete the building’s festive feeling.

If unusual gift ideas for friends and family are the order of the day, then The Lowry shop has plenty to offer. It is crammed full of novelty goodies from theatrical finger puppets and the beautiful ‘Joseph Joseph’ homeware collection, to the wonderful Lowry signature range including limited edition prints.

An interesting afternoon could easily be spent wandering around The Lowry galleries, home to the largest public collection of LS Lowry’s work. Alongside the Lowry Favourites exhibition are photographs by Salford artist, Harold Riley. His Photography Retrospective features a wide-ranging selection of pictures taken throughout his career from around the world. Beginning and ending to date in Salford, Harold’s photographs range from a gardener in Cape Town, posters in Venice, a street market in Bruges, Jerusalem in 1968, to nuns in Ireland and ballet rehearsals in Manchester.

From Sat 8 December visitors to the galleries can take an in-depth look at three Lowry paintings from totally new viewpoints. Exploding Paintings asks what Lowry’s paintings mean to a host of contributors from gallery curators to children, art historians and visitors.

In the New Year, when Christmas is all but a memory, we will welcome everyone’s favourite winter wonderland, The Snowman™. Making its North West debut at The Lowry on Friday 11 January, Raymond Briggs’ children’s classic tells the magical story of the boy whose Snowman comes to life one Christmas Eve.
