Hobsons Choice
Classic English comedy returns to Salford…
Hobson’s Choice
By Harold Brighouse
Directed by Jonathan Church
The Lowry, Wed 23 – Sun 27 January 2008
Press Night: Wed 23 January, 7.30pm
Hobson’s Choice is an irresistible story that paints a hilarious portrait of class and gender in Victorian England. Set in Salford in 1880, it remains as entertaining, relevant and radical today as it did when it was written almost 100 years ago. The show visits a very different modern-day Salford on Wed 23 – Sun 27 January 2008 at The Lowry.
One of the country's most popular and versatile actors, John Savident, brings Henry Hobson magnificently to life. Best known to audiences as Fred Elliott in Coronation Street, his many credits also include Saint Joan and The Beggar's Opera at the National Theatre and the films Remains of the Day and A Clockwork Orange.
Hobson’s Choice is the story of cantankerous and obstinate boot shop owner Henry Horatio Hobson. Hobson, a widower with a fondness for a drink, tries to get the better of his three 'uppish' daughters, by decreeing 'no marriages' to avoid the expense of a dowry. Eldest daughter Maggie rebels and sets her sights on her father's master bootmaker – the exceedingly shy Will Mossop.
This production is directed by Jonathan Church, artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre, whose credits include the Olivier Award winning Of Mice and Men. It is produced Chichester Festival Theatre, where it opened to critical acclaim, and Nick Brooke and Kenneth Wax, producers of recent sell out productions of Bedroom Farce, Arsenic and Old Lace and The Shell Seekers.
