A lavish production of Oscar Wilde’s hilarious and timeless masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest comes to The Lowry this February.
A night of wit and confusion will feature added sparkle thanks to the cast of top TV drama actors. Providing a memorable night will be Tony Britton, The Bill’s Tom Butcher (PC Steve Loxton), The Royal’s Zoie Kennedy (Meryl Taylor), Corrinne Wicks (Dr Helen Thompson, Doctors ) and Jim Alexander (Joe Walker, London’s Burning).
Known for classic films such as Sunday Blood Sunday and Day of the Jackal , Tony Britton has also starred in the popular TV sitcoms Don’t Wait Up, And Mother Makes Five and Robbins Nest.
Set in Victorian England, Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing discover they have both been leading dual lives or, as the play puts it, 'Bunburying.'
Jack lives in the country with his pretty ward Cecily Cardew, but in London he is known only as Ernest and is head over heels in love with Gwendolen Fairfax. Miss Fairfax’s cousin is Algernon, who, also under the pseudonym of Ernest, goes to the country and in turn falls passionately in love with Jack’s ward Cecily.
So there are two attractive bachelors named Ernest, who aren’t… and two beautiful girls who are in love with Ernests... but who aren’t, however, who will be when they are re-christened. Mix in the formidable Lady Bracknell and the result is an enduring comedy classic.
