Nutcracker!
Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker!
The Lowry, Tue 26 February – Sat 1 March 2008
Press night, Tue 26 February, 7.30pm
Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! comes to The Lowry this Spring hot on the heels of a hugely successful season at Sadler’s Wells. This magical fantasy is a theatrical feast with family-sized helpings of Bourne’s trademark wit and pathos.
Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.
Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and unforgettable sets and costumes by Olivier Award-winning designer Anthony Ward, combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh, hip and charmingly irreverent interpretation that will delight the whole family.
2007 saw Matthew Bourne celebrating 20 years as Artistic Director of his own independent dance company. Like Adventures in Motion Pictures before it, New Adventures has gone from strength to strength and is now Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells. It continues to give more performances at home and abroad than any other UK company.
Bourne’s work as a choreographer/director aside from New Adventures has also seen him involved in a series of hugely successful productions: Oliver, My Fair Lady and, most recently, Mary Poppins for Cameron Mackintosh and Disney.
This revival of Nutcracker! forms part of an ongoing New Adventures repertory which includes some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades – Swan Lake, The Car Man, Play Without Words, Highland Fling and Edward Scissorhands.
