National Youth Theatre returns to The Lowry from Thu 3 – Sat 5 April for their regular Easter Bites season with Harm’s Way, an explosive, dark comedy by new young writer Zawe Ashton, directed by Tessa Walker.
A drama graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University, Zawe, 22, joined National Youth Theatre after professionally acting in television from a very young age. She has previously appeared at The Lowry in Black Box and on television in Desmonds, Holby City and The Demon Headmaster, to name a few. With extensive acting experience under her belt, Zawe has recently turned her attention to writing and Harm’s Way is her first play to be produced. She is currently writing her second play as part of the Royal Court Invited Writers group, following on from her role as Young Writer in Residence at the Contact Theatre in 2006.
Harm’s Way is a dark comedy about what we are capable of when we feel like there's nothing left to lose. Knowing too much too young and being unable to break that vicious cycle that starts with our parents, and their parents, and their parents’ parents. What happens when a young person takes it on themselves to break the cycle of violence that sometimes starts from the cradle? This is what it's like to be in Harm's Way. Zawe is thrilled to be working with the National Youth Theatre at The Lowry again. She says, “NYT has been integral in my growth as an artiste. The seasons I have been involved in have left me with some of the happiest and most irreplaceable memories as a young actor”.
In partnership with The Lowry, National Youth Theatre encourages new writing by young people, aged 13 to 21, enabling them to benefit from the experience and international reputation of the NYT and the facilities and skills available at The Lowry. NYT has firmly established itself as the foremost youth arts provider and is the longest established youth theatre in the UK.
