Directed by Michael Keegan-Dolan

The Lowry, Tue 22 – Sat 26 April 2008
Press Night: Tue 22 April, 8pm

Olivier Award-nominated Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre makes its north west debut at The Lowry on Tue 22 April with James son of James, Michael Keegan-Dolan’s latest creation for his company on its first ever UK tour.

Michael Keegan-Dolan has emerged as one of Ireland’s most talented and original artists in recent years. Since 1997 he has written, directed, choreographed and co-produced seven productions for Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre including The Flowerbed, a radical re-working of Giselle. More recently he choreographed The Bull, which won the prestigious UK National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography 2007.

James son of James is a story of accidental heroism, hero worship, sadness, love, power, betrayal and revenge, told through dance, theatre, live song, original music and outrageous humour, by eleven extraordinary, international performers from Slovakia, Ireland, England, Laos, Nigeria, Tanzania and France.

James returns home for his father’s funeral having been away for eleven years. He is late and misses the burial. He becomes embroiled in the lives of ten characters: the local politician, his wife and their son, the policeman and his wife, a farmer, a doctor, a merchant, his daughter and a young woman from the east. His arrival awakens the potential for compassion and kindness among the villagers of the small rural community. Yet, over time this hope turns sour, as James becomes the victim of local rivalries, jealousies and fear.
