April Press Night: Thu 25 April, 7.30pm

The Lowry’s spectacular spring season of dance culminates in April with two internationally acclaimed performances from some of the greatest modern dancers of all time. Sylvie Guillem, widely regarded as the most ‘brilliant ballerina of her generation’, is joined on stage by Russell Maliphant for the very first time. Their mixed programme of solo pieces and duets, Push, is visiting The Lowry from Thu 24 – Fri 25 April. Nederlands Dans Theater 1, widely considered to be one of the most inventive and original dance companies in Europe, make a rare visit to The Lowry from Fri 18 – Sat 19 April with a double bill of Silent Screen and Toss of a Dice.

Defined by dancers and choreographers in their prime, Nederlands Dans Theater 1 are classically trained, but renowned for their modern choreography, lavish imagery and breath-taking theatrical staging. Established in 1959, its world-class reputation was cultivated under the direction of Jirí Kylián, former Artistic Director for 25 years, who remains an in-house choreographer.

Current Artistic Director, Anders Hellström has selected a collection of works by Kylián and resident choreographers Paul Lightfoot and Sol León for these performances at The Lowry. Silent Screen, choreographed by Lightfoot León and set to the abstract yet emotional music of Philip Glass, is a fascinating piece referring to the great themes of life. Choreographed by Jir? Kylián, Toss of a Dice comprises 12 dancers manifesting themselves, in solo and as a group, underneath a haphazardly rotating sculpture comprised of razor-sharp steel points which reflect the light in sparkling fashion.

After the sell-out success of her two Sadler’s Wells seasons, the legendary Sylvie Guillem is joined on stage at The Lowry by Russell Maliphant, for the very first time. Maliphant has developed a unique approach to choreography, encompassing his vast experience of ballet and contemporary dance as well as capoeira, t’ai chi and yoga, to create a language which is elegant, articulate and resonant.

This mixed programme features two world premières made especially for this occasion. Push, a duet combining the abilities of this extraordinary partnership set to a brand new score by Andy Cowton, and a Solo performed by Guillem with music by Mukul. The evening is completed by Shift, Maliphant’s signature solo and the powerful, driving solo, Two, performed by Guillem. The four pieces are complemented by lighting designed by Maliphant’s long-time collaborator Michael Hulls, reflecting the flow and energy between movement and light.

To ensure that theatre visitors can enjoy both shows, The Lowry is offering a special multi-buy opportunity for 2 or more dance shows this season with tickets at £10 per seat.
