Community comes together through Walkabout
Community comes together through Walkabout
The Lowry is building bridges between communities as it moves into Eccles from Little Hulton for the latest phase in its long term community outreach programme, Walkabout.
Young residents from the Yemeni, Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities in Eccles will come together to take part in community workshops culminating in an on-stage performance and display of their work on Sun 22 June at The Lowry.
The Yemeni Community Association have selected the artforms they would like to experience through Walkabout and generated interest within the community. Music and dance, film and drama, textiles and singing workshops will take place in the community to create a final production at The Lowry in June.
Walkabout aims to use creative activity to develop opportunities for participation and social engagement among Salford’s communities.
Andy Farrell, The Lowry’s Head of Community & Education, commented “First and foremost we’re interested in helping to build communities through creativity. By going out to Salford communities and finding out what they are passionate about, we can respond to their interests and encourage social participation through creative activity.”
Since January 2007 Walkabout has focused on community cohesion in Little Hulton and, alongside residents, developed 79 events, workshops culminating in the hugely successful Strike the Light event last month.
Walkabout receives support from the Big Lottery’s Fair Share Trust programme for Barton, managed by The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester. The project also involves partnerships with organisations across the city including Salford City Council and Salford PCT Health Improvement.
