Presented by the original West End producers, David Harrower’s critically acclaimed Olivier Award-winning play Blackbird, starring Robert Daws (The Royal, Roger Roger) and Dawn Steele (Monarch of the Glen), opens at The Lowry on Tue 27 May.
Winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2006, Blackbird is an intense tale of obsession, illicit desire and the wrecked lives of Ray (Robert Daws) and Una (Dawn Steele). Ray is confronted with his past when Una arrives unannounced at his office. Guilt and raw emotions are running high as they recollect the passionate love affair they had 15 years earlier.
Blackbird is an electrifying, explosive play which originally premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2005, prior to seasons in the West End, off Broadway and most recently as part of Cate Blanchett’s first season as Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company.
This new production, on its first UK tour, is directed by the award-winning David Grindley, whose work includes the smash hit Journey’s End (Olivier Award nominated and Tony Award-winning revival, West End and Broadway), Pygmalion (with Claire Danes and Jefferson Mays – Roundabout Theater Company) and The Philanthropist (Donmar Warehouse). Blackbird reunites the creative team behind Journey’s End with designs by Jonathan Fensom; lighting by Jason Taylor, and sound by Gregory Clarke.
“Lethally well-paced, Grindley's production holds the audience mesmerised for the hundred minutes of unbroken playing time and firmly establishes Blackbird as a modern classic.” The Independent
