A sure fire hit with the kids next month is the stage adaptation of Secrets, by best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson, at The Lowry.
Secrets tells the story of India and Treasure, two girls from very different walks of life, who meet by chance and become the best of friends. Inspired by the wartime heroine, the little Jewish girl Anne Frank, they write diaries, sharing their feelings and thoughts. When Treasure’s step-father turns against her, she runs away from home – to India’s house. And then life all gets a lot more complicated.
Jacqueline Wilson talks of reading Anne Frank’s diary when she was young and says no book has ever meant as much to her and that no one has ever written so well about the joys and pains of growing up as the young Anne.
Wilson is one of the Britain’s top writers for children with her sales topping 20 million. She is one of the most borrowed authors from public libraries and was recently made a Dame for her services to literacy. Her books portray children dealing with everyday problems, ranging from the death of a pet to abuse and sexuality. Her hugely popular books have earned her prizes including the Guardian Children’s Book Award and the Smarties Prize. In 2002, she was given an OBE for services to literacy in schools and, in 2008, she was made a Dame of the British Empire.
Secrets has been adapted and directed for the stage by Vicky Ireland - one of Britain’s foremost directors of theatre for children and young people. She was, for many years, Artistic Director of the prestigious Polka Theatre for Children in London and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List for Services to Drama for Children, the first award of its kind!
