Pop-Up
Local artists create pop-up exhibition of Salford landmarks
Pop-up exhibition at The Lowry
Sat 27 Sep 2008 – Sun 15 Mar 2009
Local artists are participating in a creative project with The Lowry, culminating in the display of their work in the galleries alongside art by some of the world’s leading illustrators and paper engineers, in an exhibition exploring the magic of pop-up (Sat 27 Sep 2008 – Sun 15 Mar 2009).
The Lowry has invited artists and community group leaders to learn how to make a drawing quite literally leap off the page. Over the summer, the group have participated in various workshops starting with research and drawing sessions with visual artist Jack Doyle. Together, they undertook a field trip around Salford to sketch and photograph the areas and buildings they were interested in recreating.
This was followed by workshops with Cheadle-based paper engineer Paul Johnson, an internationally recognised pop-up artist. Johnson is teaching the skills and techniques required for the participants to create pop-up versions of their selected buildings.
By involving community group leaders and artists, The Lowry is keen to ensure that once learned these skills can easily be passed onto others, including childrens’ clubs, arts groups and schools.
Fay Taylor, The Lowry’s Visual Arts Education Manager, commented “This is a unique opportunity for the artists’ to develop professionally and also share their new creative skills with many others in the community. It’s an added bonus that they can show their pop-up work in The Lowry galleries, as part of a larger exhibition exploring this incredible paper craft.”
When the exhibition opens at The Lowry in September, visitors can see the results of this project alongside work by professional paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world.
