Autumn Musical Madness at The Lowry
Autumn Musical Madness at The Lowry
Coinciding with the current national press coverage of the increased popularity of musicals in London theatres, The Lowry is delighted to present 3 major musicals this Autumn, beginning with the Madness smash-hit Our House, followed by West Side Story and The Lowry’s own The Wizard of Oz.
Direct from the West End on its first UK tour, The Lowry stages the award-winning Our House from Mon 15 - Sat 20 September. Our House received rave reviews and public acclaim when it opened in 2002 and won the 2003 Olivier Award for ‘Best New Musical’.
Featuring the most famous songs of 80’s pop sensations Madness such as Baggy Trousers, House of Fun and It Must Be Love, Our House tells the story of sixteen year-old Joe, in love for the first time, and the fateful day when something happens to tear his world in two.
Steve Brookstein, winner of the first ever series of ITV’s X-Factor in 2004, will be making his stage debut as ‘Dad’. Gwyneth Strong, best known as Cassandra from Only Fools and Horses will play ‘Kath Casey’. Written by Tim Firth (Calendar Girls, Neville’s Island), the show is being staged by the entire original West End creative team, including Director Matthew Warchus (Lord of the Rings, and Art), and choreographer Peter Darling (Billy Elliott).
50 years after West Side Story made its London debut, this vibrant new production of the classic dance musical arrives at The Lowry for 2 weeks from Tue 30 September, fresh from sell-out success in Tokyo, Paris and Beijing. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with choreography by the legendary Jerome Robbins and songs as unforgettable as America and I Feel Pretty, West Side Story has been hailed ‘a musical landmark’ (The Guardian).
This Christmas the magical family musical, The Wizard of Oz, is back by popular demand and The Lowry are delighted to welcome Lorna Luft, international star and Judy Garland’s daughter, as the Wicked Witch. From Sat 29 Nov – Sun 4 January, families can enjoy singalong favourites such as We’re Off To See The Wizard and Over The Rainbow in a production that remains faithful to the classic Judy Garland film, while incorporating stunning special effects along the way.
