Double-decker buses will take the public on an alternative tourist guide of Ordsall next month. Created by local residents this is the latest phase of The Lowry’s community outreach programme, Walkabout.

Stopping off at specially designed bus-stops ‘tourists’ will visit film screenings, photography exhibitions and contemporary dance performances created to reflect the diversity of the places, people and history of Ordsall.

A local steering group, including parents from the new Primrose Primary School, chose to focus the Walkabout creative activity on the issues of regeneration and its impact on the old and new communities in the area. The projects aim to catalogue the places and buildings that are important to the people of Ordsall from churches and parks to more personal ‘secret’ places like street corners or benches.

Contemporary street dance at Salford Lads’ and Girls’ club will welcome visitors to the start of the tour with photos of Ordsall taken by the children. Installations include banners and a photography exhibition created by the congregation of St Clement’s Church. Ordsall Park will be decorated by large flower planters incorporating statements and images, created by Friends of Ordsall park. The homeless centre, Salford Loaves and Fishes, will present a film focusing on the issues of homelessness.

The Lowry on Walkabout aims to use creative activity to develop opportunities for participation and social engagement among Salford’s communities. Projects are driven by the participants and their ideas, reacting to issues they have identified within their own communities. Walkabout encourages participants to work together to devise, plan and deliver creative projects which, in turn, challenge issues embedded within their communities and contribute to improving life for residents.

Since January 2007 Walkabout has focused on community cohesion in Little Hulton and, alongside residents, developed 79 events and workshops culminating in the hugely successful Strike the Light event last March. Walkabout has moved into Ordsall and this event is the culmination of the workshops in the area.

Walkabout in Ordsall and Langworthy receives support from a range of agencies in the area and is financed by The Lowry and Salford Primary Care Trust.
