Press Night Events in September 2008


The Autumn season at The Lowry begins with a bang when Dan and Jeff return to The Lowry with another potted adventure, this time on the high seas with Potted Pirates. The stars are also out in force, from Alison Steadman in Enjoy to X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein in Our House, via LipService’s spoof showbiz couple, Tony and Twizzle, in a UK première. Serious drama is on offer too, with the National Theatre’s acclaimed Waves, Frantic Assembly’s electrifying Othello and The Lowry’s own modern day Salford Macbeth.

Wed 27 August - Le Grande Cirque – 7.30pm, Lyric
A cast of 50 world-class artists perform a breathtaking and heart pounding spectacle in this magical and spellbinding circus show.

Thu 28 August - Potted Pirates – 7pm, Quays
Dan and Jeff (Potted Potter, 2007) are swapping wizards for walking the plank and will be recounting everyone's favourite pirate legends, from Long John Silver to Jack Sparrow.

Mon 1 September – Enjoy – 7.30pm, Lyric
By Alan Bennett. Directed by Christopher Luscombe. Starring prolific British actress Alison Steadman and David Troughton (BBC’s Casualty 1907). The Lowry is delighted to host this rarely performed dark comedy about an ageing couple living in the last back-to-back in Leeds.

Tue 9 September - LipService Theatre in association with The Lowry, Tony and Twizzle – The Glory Years – 8pm, Quays
By Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding. UK première of award-winning comedy duo LipService’s return to The Lowry for an audience with spoof showbiz couple Anthony Chalmers and Isobel ‘Twizzle’ Trilling.

Mon 15 September - Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company Ltd, Our House – 7.30pm, Lyric
Emotionally charged, Olivier Award-winning musical starring original X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein and featuring hit songs by 80s pop group Madness.

Tue 23 September - National Theatre, Waves - 8pm, Quays
Bringing Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves into the digital age, this acclaimed production comes to The Lowry ahead of a Broadway run.

Wed 24 September – A Lowry production in association with National Youth Theatre, Salford Macbeth – 7.45pm, Studio
Following the success of 2007’s Salford Season, this year’s Community Rep brings Shakespeare to Salford with three crack-head witches and a bloody gangland assassination.

Thu 25 September - Rambert Dance Company, Eternal Light Tour 2008 – 7.30pm, Lyric
With its Associate Orchestra London Musici. Rambert returns to its partner theatre with a powerful new programme including the world première of Eternal Light by Artistic Director Mark Baldwin.

Tue 30 September – West Side Story - 7.30pm, Lyric
This vibrant new production of the classic musical inspired by Romeo and Juliet arrives fresh from sell-out success in Tokyo, Paris and Beijing.

Tue 30 September – Frantic Assembly and Theatre Royal Plymouth, Othello – 8pm, Quays
By William Shakespeare. Adapted and directed by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett. Fusing classic text with hard-hitting choreography, Frantic’s electrifying take on Shakespeare’s thriller-tragedy exposes fear and prejudice in 21st century Britain.
