Frantic Assembly explodes onto The Lowry stage with its first Shakespeare production, an electrifying adaptation of Othello, one of the most emotional of Shakespeare’s great masterpieces. This leading movement theatre company’s production features nine actors in a brutal tragedy of paranoia, sex and murder from Tue 30 September.
A black man in a working class northern town, Othello is a bouncer at the local pub. In a world of broken glass and beatings in the car park, there’s tension around the pool table, cues in hand and it is all about to kick off. Fusing a taut adaptation of the classic text with its trademark hard-hitting choreography, Frantic Assembly takes a scalpel to 21st Century Britain, exposing the prejudice, danger and fears that underpin society today.
In over fourteen years of work, Frantic Assembly has developed a reputation as the country’s leading movement theatre company. Productions including Stockholm, Dirty Wonderland, Peepshow and Sell Out have generated phenomenal critical and public acclaim. Artistic Directors Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett have worked as movement directors on productions including The Bacchae and the multi-award winning Black Watch for the National Theatre of Scotland and Market Boy for the National Theatre.
