Pop-Up
Pop-Up opens at The Lowry next week
Sat 27 September 2008 – Sun 15 March 2009
Exhibition of pop up work from five continents & Salford!
Including the world’s FIRST EVER ‘pop down!’
From Sat 23 September, visitors can travel to some of the great cities in the world from across five continents and see how famous buildings and landmarks have proved a popular subject for pop-ups – even The Lowry!
The City of Salford will also be represented by local artists who have participated in a creative project with The Lowry. They have learnt how to make a drawing quite literally leap off the page and created pop-ups of Salford landmarks.
A pop-up is a flat, folded piece of paper which magically turns into a three-dimensional picture when opened. Artist Jack Doyle has created what is believed to be the FIRST EVER pop down! He has created a pop down version of Lowry’s painting, Wet Colliery, Clifton Country Park, forming a 3D version of the mine shaft with the canal at the bottom.
This fun and original exhibition explores the magic of pop up with video footage and art work by some of the world’s leading illustrators including Robert Sabuda and paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world.
The city as a subject is a continual source of inspiration for artists and this special exhibition takes a fascinating look at this theme through the inspiring and enchanting world of pop-up. From the Eiffel Tower and Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum to Buckingham Palace and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, visitors will enjoy a dramatic and surprising journey around the world.
Designed and themed on ’Around the world in 80 days’ with its tagline ‘see everything in the world worth seeing!’ this vibrant exhibition shows 3D versions of iconic landmarks from across the globe including Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and America.
Ideal for families, this unique exhibition also provides an insight into the creation of pop-up art work helping to increase understanding of this magical artform. An area in the exhibition is dedicated to creative activity aimed at encouraging visitors to make their own pop-ups. Workshops for youths, adults and family will accompany the exhibition.
