The Big Draw – Salford Pops up!
Sat 11 October 2008, 11am – 3pm
Pop-up exhibition at The Lowry
Until Sun 15 March 2009
Visitors to The Lowry can learn how to make exciting pop-up buildings to add to an ever-growing paper city of Salford on Saturday 11 October. As part of The Lowry’s Big Draw launch local artists will be on hand throughout the day to show youngsters how to create a pop-up picture of famous landmarks of Salford until the city pops-up before their eyes!
Last year’s Big Draw launch at The Lowry won a Drawing Inspiration Award from the organisers of the national drawing initiative, The Campaign for Drawing. Saturday 11 October at The Lowry will be a free, fun and busy day for families which is open to all. Other free Big Draw activities will continue at The Lowry throughout October, including Free Family Sunday on Sunday 26 October.
The local artists leading the Big Draw celebration were invited to learn how to make a drawing quite literally leap off the page during a series of workshops with paper engineer Paul Johnson. They created pop-up versions of buildings and landmarks in Salford which can be seen in the Pop-up exhibition, whilst developing skills in paper engineering to pass onto the local schools, community groups and clubs they work with.
The Lowry’s Pop-up exhibition explores the magic of pop-up with a fun and original exhibition displaying art work by some of the world’s leading illustrators including Robert Sabuda and paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world. Designed and themed on ’Around the world in 80 days’ this vibrant exhibition shows 3D versions of iconic landmarks from across the globe.
The City of Salford is represented by landmarks created by the local artists, including The Lowry (dubbed Salford’s Guggenheim), Salford Cinema and The Lighthouse at Monton. Ideal for families, an area in the exhibition is dedicated to creative activity aimed at encouraging visitors to make their own pop-up’s and learn the basics of this exciting art form.
The Big Draw involves a series of events in the UK every year where everyone has the chance to give drawing a go. It is an annual campaign designed to demonstrate that drawing is enjoyable, liberating and at everyone’s fingertips.
